Joey Hannan Limerick Triathlon, 2nd May 2010

The newest member of the 795 family, Cian gets some kip.

[Race Report by PJ Dunne]

For five Racing795ers and their support crew all roads led to Limerick last weekend. Barry took part in the olympic and Joy, Siobhan, Ruairi and PJ in the sprint distance.

The sprint distance started first with all bar Siobhan off in the so called “fast wave”. The 50 m pool was a bit daunting at first but all the 795ers quickly got in to their rhythm. Siobhan had the last laugh. Having started in the second wave, she put in the quickest swim time, 11m 20 sec.

In the olympic swim Barry just made his wave start in the nick of time (Too busy supporting his clubmates). But it didn’t upset his swim putting in a very strong swim with a time of 28m 47 sec.

Out on the bike and the triathletics were all fighting a strong wind coupled with a not so smooth road surface. It was an out and back course, the sprinter doing 23.5km and the sole olympian doing 40 km. Good times were put in by all.

Meanwhile back in transition the crown of transition king was taken up by Ruairi with two very impressive transition times.

On with the runners for a 5 km run for sprinters and a two lap 10 km for Barry. Ruairi and PJ posted great times with only 6 seconds between there run times. But the most impressive run of the day was put in by Joy with a PB  of 25min 42sec. Another great day on the triathlon Ireland calendar.

Thanks to the support crew of David F, Claire, Lorraine, Martin, Yvonne and all the kids.

North Tipp Sprint, Nenagh – 17th April 2010

North Tipp Sprint 2010

[Race report by Joy Furlong who took part in her first Tri in Nenagh]

Saturday 17th April saw the start of the National Triathlon Series , the now popular North Tipp Sprint (750m/20k/5k) was held in Nenagh. Racing 795 was out in force with four seasoned members – Don Morrissey, Barry Byrne, Martin Mimnagh and David Furlong and one debutante Joy Furlong attending. It was a fabulous morning with clear skies and the sun shining had all in good and hopeful spirits. As it was a pool swim the start was prolonged for some of the lads but they busied themselves cheering on the others. First off were David and Joy, with the more experienced swimmer exiting the pool first, David was off to a flying start setting the tone for the day. For Joy the swim was not easy and she exited the pool with relief to have finished it. Don was off in wave 5 after a long wait but it did not deter him, he swam well in a time of  13:27 . Just stopping short of the elite wave were Martin and Barry  with both of them producing excellent swim times.

And on to the Bike! Transitions were brisk and for all it was out onto a changed bike route. It was hilly in places but more focus was on avoiding  the many marked potholes, the force of winter still evident. Heads were down and all focused, pushing really hard to make all that TT training over the winter pay off.  The men had things to prove! First home was David who was quickly into his running stride proving that four months free from running does have its benefits, he crossed the finish line a minute and a half better than last years run time for a total of 1:23:41. Joy finished next after an enjoyable run in a highly respectable 1:42:23 on her debut.

Meanwhile, the boys were battling it out on the bikes. Don was into transition 2 first after a good show on the bike,no time was wasted before he set off on his run home, crossing the line in a very impressive total time of 1:16:05

Martin looked driven as he returned from the bike leg into transition 2, and in no time was pushing it hard on the run, crossing the line  in a time of 1:12:38. More in the tank from martin no doubt as a stitch slowed progress a bit in the run.

Barry returned from the bike route with all guns firing, his trick with the elastic bands  on the bike shoes worked a treat! No time was lost before he was out on his run giving his family a big wave as he zipped by.  He crossed the finished line relieved as the cold he was trying to keep at bay had taken hold making his first of the season not the most enjoyable one.

As a first time experience the North Tipp Sprint is certainly a good one, very efficently run,  hey they even organised the weather. It would be hard not to enjoy yourself in conditions such as we had.

As always a huge thank you has to go to the support crew, the encouraging words and loud cheers really do push you on and would be sorely missed if those kind minded people did not attend. So thanks a million Lorraine and girls and also to the Furlong/Kelly crew.

TriLaois – Saturday 10th April 2010

Ruari, Siobhan and Peter in Sunny PortLaoise

[Portlaoise “Try-athlon” – Race Report by first time triathlete, Ruairi Gough]

TriLaois took place on Saturday 10th of April in the Portlaoise Leisure Centre. It was a sprint triathlon consisting of 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. There was an early start for the competitors from Racing 795 who travelled for the event, Peter, Siobhan and Ruairi. Great weather made the event more enjoyable, and made the getting up early and waiting around part more bearable.

Approximately 250 participants took part in the race in eight waves, Siobhan led the way in wave 4, Ruairi was in wave 6 and finally Peter in wave 7. The swim was handy enough, although at times it got close to turning into a boxing match, due to participants in the lane who did not pace themselves.

LESSON 1 – Go in a faster lane, or go first in lane.

After 30 lengths of the pool it was out to T1 where time was lost putting on socks and tying laces.

LESSON 2 – Use Elastic laces

The 20km cycle was an out and back on a flat route, although there were some small drags along the way. The cycle ended back at the leisure centre, where numerous cyclists lost their footing dismounting their bikes in cycling shoes.

LESSON 3 – always take 2 seconds more to slow and get off bike.

T2 was straight forward, for those of us wearing runners!! My best performance all day, fourth place overall in T2, New Racing 795 transition king!!!

The run was 5km, out and back, strange experience for the first mile as the legs were getting used to running, and felt like jelly coming off the bike.

Overview: Very well run event, in the perfect venue with a great set up for bringing children. I would recommend this as a good beginner triathlon. Thanks to Martin & kids, Claire & kid and PJ for coming out to support us. Onto the next, bring it on!!!

Naas Wheelworx Duathlon – 24th January 2010

Gorrillas in the Mist. Martin, Paul and PJ at the Naas Duathlon.

The triathlon season kicked off again last Sunday with the now annual Naas wheelworx duathlon in Punchestown. Three hardy brave souls (and supporters) from Racing 795 took part, namely Paul Hutton, Martin Mimnagh and PJ Dunne.

Freezing fog was the order of the day with visibility down to 30 m in places. But with a field of 149 and it been a qualifier for the World duathlon championships it wasnt long hotting up. A mass start was the order of the day. The three 795 ers all set off together, but PJ was heard to say “I’ll start behind you two so at least I wont be passed”.

Paul was quick to get in his stride and open a early lead on Martin and PJ. As the kms went by Martin also pulled away from PJ. Paul finished the first 3.5k in a time of 11.42 , Martin 12.31 and PJ 12.42 . The quickest first run time was 10:01! So into T1 pretty uneventful really. All exited t1 in the same places.

Out on a challenging 20k bike leg with two decent hills to conquer before the turn around to come back. At the 10k mark Martin was closing rapidly on Paul, and eventually caught him with a few ks to go. Bike times: Martin 36.41 Paul 37.47 PJ 38.35 . Quickest bike leg 32.02! .

Into T2 and Martin had the lead.  Martin was first to start the second run closely followed by Paul, PJ had a slightly better T2 after the disaster of T1! Back to the run, Paul had Martin in his sights and caught him half way through and finished this second run in a time of 13.46, Martin 14.18 and PJ 15.01.

A great day was had by all , the season begins!!
